Pittsburgh Pirates 1st Quarter Awards

Welcome to the 1st annual 1st quarter of the season awards!   Since  the season is only a quarter of the way done, we’ve only been able to fill up a quarter of the ballroom.  Hope everyone enjoyed the meal – Quarter Pounders!

So how about those Pirates – did anyone think they’d finish the first quarter of the season 7 games over .500? How have they done it? The main reason is the offense.  They are in the top 3 of the league in just about every offensive category.  Without further ado, lets get to the awards:

Best reliever (non-closer):

Nominees:

Michael Feliz – 17 IP, 0-1, 3.18 ERA, 23 K, 7 BB

Richard Rodriguez – 14.2 IP, 1-1, 1.84 ERA, 25 K, 2 BB

Edgar Santana – 16.2 IP, 0-00, 3.24 ERA, 16 K, 4 BB

Winner: Richard Rodriguez. Not bad for a guy the Pirates picked up from the scrap heap and had a horrible year last year with Baltimore.

Best reliever (closer):

Nominees:

Felipe Rivero – 16.2 IP, 2-0, 2.70 ERA, 18 K, 7BB

Felipe Vazquez – 16.2 IP, 2-0, 2.70 ERA, 18 K, 7BB

Winner: Felipe Vazquez.  No truth to the rumor that he plans to change his last name every 3 months.

Best Starting Pitcher:

Nominees:

Chad Kuhl – 45.1 IP, 4-2, 4.17 ERA, 42 K, 16 BB

Jameson Taillon – 39.2 IP, 2-3, 4.08 ERA, 35 K, 12 BB

Trevor Williams – 46 IP, 4-2, 3.13 ERA, 29 K, 20 BB

Winner: Trevor Williams, his Twitter account is great, and he’s willing to pee on a teammate to help him out:

Now let’s get to the awards giving out at an earlier ceremony:
