Dennis Smith Jr went for 18 last night against Portland, with a highlight reel dunk that has my vote for dunk of the year. The rookie’s scrappy defense led to a breakaway that featured a self alley-oop that had Dirk and the rest of the Mavs bench fired up. DSJ also led the Mavericks with eight assists and tied Maxi Kleber for the team high in rebounds with eight.
Barnes, Barea, and Ferrell all scored 15 to avoid getting swept by the Blazers this season.
Portland 22 27 29 31 – 109
Dallas 22 28 32 33 – 115
Its good to see the Mavs still competing with higher tier teams in the late stretch of the season. On the other hand, with a 4 game lead on the Suns, you have to ask how these late season wins will effect their draft position.
The Mavericks will begin a three-game road trip Wednesday at Orlando.
No more Nerlens
Nerlens Noel has been suspended for the final five games of the season for violating the leagues anti-drug program. This has been a forgettable season for Noel, after betting on himself and declining a 4-year $70M deal from Dallas, Nerlens took the teams qualifying offer of 4.1 million for one season. A risky move considering no other team has shown interest in the 23 year old center for the last few seasons. Noel will be an unrestricted free agent this summer.
Question of the day:
What pick do you think the Mavericks will end up with in the coming draft?
